Sarah and Aditya were off to the first place in Aditya’s car. Aditya loved his car. It was the only thing which kept him sane in this superstitious world. He had a custom job honda city ivtec engine car.
Chapterwise story listing -> The Superstition
They were on their way to Agra. In Agra, Aditya found a ruin which was supposedly haunted because the rich couple who owned it died there under mysterious circumstances. On the way Aditya told Sarah the tale of the couple.
“The tale of the mysterious death of the couple Mirabai Rajesh and Rajendra Rajesh. So it was 1883. The British were ruling India. Mirabai and Rajendra were Indian advisers to the crown.
This made them the richest Indians of that time. They had a big mansion with glass walls. Both of them were happy. One day they were coming back from a party. The car had a side view mirror which broke before the party.
On the way back the other side view mirror also broke. It was a superstition that broken mirror is bad luck but Mirabai and Rajendra were educated so they did not believe in superstitions. They went back home. In the mansion there were 23 mirrors to be exact.
As the night progressed one by one, mirrors broke till there were 13 left. The mirrors shattered on their own. This scared the crap out of both of them. They tried to leave the house but something didn’t let them leave.
Rajendra heard a loud scream and a thud like someone fell. He went to check it in the bathroom and found Mirabai completely frozen pointing to the mirror. He checked her pulse, there was none.
When he looked into the mirror he also froze to death. In the autopsy report both of them died of an acute heart attack. The mansion was searched for any reason and none was found.”
“And we are going there?” Sarah asked.
“Yes, and better than just going there, we are going to stay the night and coincidentally today is their death anniversary.”
“Wow… It’s gonna be fun.”
“You don’t scare easy do you?”
“Nopes… Stay tuned… You are going to find more surprises…”
It was almost afternoon when they reached Agra. Aditya said, “I guess we have some time to kill so why don’t we enjoy the tourist places. What do you say?”
“Okay, why not? It’s not like I am going to get a lot of Indian trips.”
After a long day, Aditya took Sarah to a quiet restaurant where they had a romantic dinner. After dinner they headed towards the supposedly haunted mansion. It was on the outskirts of Agra in some secluded corn field away from all kinds of civilisation.
Aditya said, ” As the locals heard screaming noises every night so they moved their homes far away from this mansion. It is also said that some contractors tried to demolish the ruins and they suffered from severe heart attacks too. According to me all these are lies to keep thieves away from their homes.”
“We’ll know that tonight!” said Sarah.
Aditya had arranged to put 23 mirrors in the house and managed to recreate the indoor decor. Sarah was impressed. That night they made love. When they woke up the next morning nothing had happened.
Aditya checked the mirrors. 10 mirrors were shattered. only 13 were left. It spooked Sarah. Aditya knew it was the work of his friend who arranged for all this.
Sarah and Aditya went out to get the car. Aditya found that the side view mirrors were smashed too. Aditya was furious. He agreed that the mirror prank was good but smashing his car, bad move dude.
Aditya asked Sarah to accompany him to his friend Anil’s home. When they reached Anil’s home Aditya asked Sarah to wait in the car. He went in and angrily shouted, “ANIL!!!! ANIL YOU SON OF A BITCH COME DOWN HERE!!!”
Anil said, “Hey Adi, calm down what happened!!”
“How dare you break my car’s side view mirror?”
“I didn’t! What the hell are you talking about? I know you love your car man!”
“So you didn’t break the mirrors in that mansion also did you?”
“No I didn’t. I was at my shop all night. Ask my uncle!”
After Aditya confirmed it with Anil’s uncle, he knew some kid did the prank. He swore that he would find the kid and make him pay! Anil told Aditya to stay away from the mansion. It was not safe but Aditya was not ready to listen. Suddenly they heard Sarah scream in the car. Both of them ran out to check on her. She was standing out of the car scared out of her wits. Aditya asked, “What happened?”
“I saw… something… in the rear view mirror.”
Aditya double checked and found nothing. He said, “It’s nothing Sarah. Just checked. Come on let’s head back to the mansion. We’ll rest today and head to the next location tomorrow.”
Sarah checked again. There was nothing. Sarah could have sworn that there was a man with a burnt up face and hollow eyes sitting right beside her.
On the way back to the mansion a black cat crossed their paths twice. It was a sign of bad luck. Sarah could feel something bad was coming and all she could think about was how good it would be for her dissertation if something bad happens. She didn’t have a clue what she was walking into, when they got back to the mansion.
A lurking shadow in the attic smiled… and vanished into thin air…
